5 Alternative First Dance Songs

Step away from the Ella Fitzgerald album, put down the Al Green. Here are 5 songs for the music fans, for couples seeking something awesome but not obvious for their first dance.

Pulp, Something Changed

Cool, understated, quietly beautiful. Has to be Jarvis. A great song for couples who want their first dance to be a little less Hollywood, a little more… Sheffield?

Sister Sledge, Thinking of You

Might not be the most obscure choice but I challenge you to find a more uplifting song. Really, try. You’ll both be grinning from ear-to-ear with this disco classic and no doubt have a chorus of your friends and family singing along as they crowd round. An absolute belter.

Ce Ce Peniston, Finally (7" Choice Mix)

Does the idea of a slow dance make you cringe? If you’re more hands-in-the-air than slow waltz, why not kick off the party as you mean to go on with this 90s classic. Cheesy? Maybe. Awesome? Yes.

David Bowie, Rebel Rebel

Lyrics with a liquid approach to gender and the cracking line “hot tramp, I love you so.” A song for those couples more prone to a subtle wink than a grand gesture, it is romantic in the best way.

Blur, Tender

Starts slow, ends massive. Let this anthem carry you into married life, literally - friends and family will most likely lift you aloft as you belt this out to each other.

Or, if all else fails, why not go with our namesake and favourite disco track ever – Love Come Down by Evelyn Champagne King. You can relive your arms-in-the-air, confetti-canon memories from our club nights.

Love Come Down Weddings is here. Your saviour from the Grease Mega Mix.
